Stephen Brauner
The power of playing with media like cast resins, vintage papers, copper and canvas gives New Orleans native Stephen Brauner an opportunity to stretch the cultural meaning of New Orleans into novel pieces. Although no formal training in art, Steve has artistic epiphanies. Seeing blends of things that at first don't seem to go together. The more seemingly mundane the material is, the more it speaks to him.
Steve admits that, as a kid, he could never understand the attraction of his hometown. Today, he has a whole different perspective, creating art that makes sense of the cultural mystique of America's most European city. By tapping into his life experiences, a creative heritage that includes community, artists, cuisine and musicians.
"For over thirty years, I was satisfied working in trades like electrical, cabinetmaking, X-ray service and construction. They were weaving an unconscious thread of experience within me that would one day connect to my art. Post Katrina, things changed, I knew I wanted to be part of the rebirth experience of my city. I longed to create tangible pieces of art that would emphasize the traditions and culture of my home. My hope is that you see in my art that translation of my need to make something lasting, something genuine and something that declares: This is what a storm surge cannot wash away. This is what wind cannot carry off. Our culture... Our Art, that is what remains steadfast.”
